The Emptiness Project was designed with a sixth-grade classroom teacher I've worked with for the past 5 years, Iris DeJesus. She felt that her students weren't really connected to their school, a byproduct of being bused in from many different neighborhoods on the northside of Chicago. So we designed this project together to help them express this feeling of disconnect. The students were given a simple task: find and photograph emptiness in your school. After the photos were completed and printed out, poet Amanda Lichtenstein guided them in some creative writing that produced some awesome results. Chicago Public Radio highlighted this prjoect on their 848 program. Listen here.
